Is It Legal to Buy Weed Online in Australia?

Not for recreational use — there is no legal way to buy cannabis online in Australia outside a medical prescription. What is legal and does happen online is the medicinal pathway: a telehealth consultation with a registered doctor, an authorised prescription, and dispensing by a licensed pharmacy. The ACT allows adults to grow and possess small amounts for personal use, but selling or buying it — online or otherwise — is still illegal there too.

You book an online consultation with a doctor registered as an Authorised Prescriber, or one who can apply under the TGA Special Access Scheme (SAS-B) on your behalf. If they assess you as a suitable candidate, they issue a prescription, which a licensed pharmacy dispenses and posts to you.

Most licensed pharmacies dispatch within 1–2 business days of an approved prescription, with delivery typically taking 2–5 business days depending on your location. Regional and remote areas can take longer.

This is a genuinely important distinction from most other prescription medicines. THC can trigger a positive roadside drug test and most Australian states currently have zero-tolerance driving laws for THC presence — having a valid prescription is not an automatic defence in every state. Initial consultations with telehealth clinics commonly range from roughly $50–$100, with cheaper follow-up appointments. This is separate from the cost of the prescribed product itself, which is not currently subsidised by the PBS for most cannabis medicines.
